Did you know that the Williamsburg-James City County School
Division offers a gifted program, called Visions, with services during the
school day?
A variety of gifted services are available to students. In
the early grades (K-2), more challenging work is provided by a primary
visions teacher one day a week. Students formally identified for gifted
services in kindergarten to grade 4 receive those services through a
Differentiated Education Plan implemented by the regular classroom
teacher. In grade five, students identified for gifted services in
mathematics and/or language arts receive instruction from the designated
gifted program teacher at their school. During the middle school years, students identified for gifted services receive
instruction in English and social studies from the buildings designated
gifted program teachers. Students identified for gifted services in
mathematics receive instruction in middle school by highly qualified
mathematics teachers. At the high school level, students identified for
gifted services are clustered in intensified English classes in grades
nine and ten and in World History I or II. The students are cluster
grouped in grade ten in AP Human Geography. In 11th and 12th grades, the
students receive gifted services in AP classes, dual enrollment, and
through mentorships. Students are eligible for receiving gifted
services through an identification process. A committee at each school
determines eligibility through a child’s profile of information that
includes nationally normed ability and achievement test scores, teacher
recommendations, parent recommendations, and products produced in the
classroom that exceed their age peers. A child can be considered for
gifted services from kindergarten to grade 12. Formal identification for
gifted services occurs in the spring of grade four. If you want to refer
your child for gifted services, please contact the designated gifted
program teacher at your school. For more information about gifted
services and the identification process, contact the designated gifted
program teacher at your school or Dr. Jeanne M. Struck, Supervisor of
Gifted and Fine Arts at struckj@wjcc.k12.va.us or call
757-253-6791. Information is also available on the gifted
program website |
